Putting is a huge part of your game and golf score. Almost 50% for most amateurs! With that number being so high, do you think you should work on your golf putting stroke to improve your score?
The mechanics of the stroke for putting are mostly ignored, and yet…if improved, could save more than a handful of strokes off your score! You can look at two apsects of the stroke to keep it somewhat simple.
The path of the stroke and the tempo. These two factors can directly affect any putt. Some of the issues with path are things like body movement. Many of us will get eager to look where the ball is going soon after contact. This will take us out of our posture and cause a mishit putt. Nine times out of ten you will miss the putt.
Focus on keeping your head down long after you’ve hit the putt. Another issue is being a “handsy” putter. Putting from your wrists and not your shoulders. The putter moves back and forth from the shoulders not your wrists.
Tempo is crucial. Getting quick and jabbing at the putt will not promote a smooth tempo with solid contact. Think of rythm! Do a count in your head on every putt. Count slowly one back, then two through. Do this on EVERY putt! Also, think of bringing your putter head smoothly all the way through the ball encouraging good contact and not a “hit” of the ball.
Remember…putting is half your score! Improve it just a little bit and you’ll shave at least 2-3 strokes off your score easily!
