Correcting A Golf Slice Is Easy

Published in Golf Swing Instruction

There are a number of ways of correcting a golf slice, each of which depends upon the reason for the slice.  The average player is almost certain to slice a golf ball sooner or later, and knowledge of how to correct this fault is invaluable.

Be Aware of what Causes a Golf Slice

Many golfers take years to overcome this problem, but if you are to become a decent golfer  you must become aware of what causes a slice and what actions you can take to correct it.

Even tour professionals hit the dreaded slice now and again, but they know what to do on course to put it right until they are able to have their coach check them out for any stance or swing faults that have crept into their game.  Your golf stance should be about the same width as your shoulders.

If you align both shoulders and both feet with the target, you will have a good chance of avoiding a slice, and you left foot should be pointing slightly to the left with the right straight in front of you.  Perfect your stance on the driving range since it is very important to where the ball goes.

Don’t Hold the Club too Tight

Your grip is also important and you should not grip the club too tightly with your right hand or this will hook the ball out left.  Relax and grip the club with the back of your left hand pointing to the target and your right hand exactly opposite.  If you hands stay like this throughout the swing, you should not slice the ball.   If you do, then turn the shaft slightly counter-clockwise.  This will bring the club face more in line with the golf ball when you hit it.  Practice this on the range until you are hitting the ball straight.  Keep making slight adjustments until you are happy with the flight of the ball, then practice with your new grip and stance until it is second nature to you. Keep Your Left Shoulder Down

When you swing, your left shoulder should be below the right and should stay there until after the ball has been struck.  If it lifts, or if your chest rotates too quickly, the club head will lag and you will hit across the ball.

This will cause a slice, since although the face of your club might be aiming straight at the target, the club itself is cutting across the ball, so making it spin.  It is the spin that causes it to start drifting out left.

A slice is a dreadful problem for a golfer to have, because unless you know how to correct it you are liable to make it worse.  Some golfers deliberately aim left to make sure they hit the fairway, but think of the distance you will lose doing this.  It is not the proper way to correct your swing and no decent golfer should consider it as an alternative.

If you understand that a slice is caused by hitting the ball with an angle between the club face and direction of strike, you will be able to adjust to suit. Correcting a golf slice is a matter of ensuring that you hit the ball straight to the target with a club face that is square to the ball at the moment of impact. This is not difficult to do, and practice at standing properly, swinging straight and holding the club with a proper grip should soon take care of your slice. Recommended Slice Correcting Resource
