Before you can start working to fix a golf slice you have to know what causes it. You can sort a problem until you understand what causes that problem. Many golfers just look at where the ball lands, then compensate to suit. That is not the way to cure your slice.
Yes, you can get nearer the target if you aim out left then slice in onto the fairway. But how much distance do you lose? You have no accuracy and are trusting to luck that you have compensated enough. It’s not even target golf – it’s like trying to play target golf with one of these trick balls that can go anywhere.
Identify the Cause of your Slice First
What you must do is identify the cause of your slice then work on eliminating it. Everybody slices the ball now and again, and the only difference between the pros and the rest of us is that they know what causes it and can make sure that don’t repeat the shot during the round. So what does cause it?
A golf ball is affected by the spin that is imparted on it by the club face. If this spin is round to the right, or clockwise, the ball will drag round to the right. The reason is connected with the relative speeds and drag on each side of the ball. The two sides of the ball are moving in different directions relative to the airflow round the moving ball. There are therefore different degrees of drag which cause the ball to curve round towards the side that is moving backwards.
Do not Spin the Ball Sideways
The way to prevent a slice is to make sure that you do not spin the ball clockwise. You could spin it anticlockwise, but this would have the opposite effect and you would hook the ball. If you are able to control the degree of spin you put on the ball, you can control the degree of curve and call it a fade. In a way, a slice is an uncontrolled fade.
You can fix a slice by ensuring that you hit the ball straight towards the target with a straight swing, and you club face straight on to the ball. A slice is caused by the ball being hit not quite square, either with a club that is off square to the ball on the strike, or by you swinging across the ball.
Strengthen Your Grip for a Quick Fix
n the case of the former, you can cure your slice by using a stronger grip. If you turn your hands a bit towards the left on the shaft of the golf club, you will straighten up the club at the moment of impact. In the latter case, where you are swinging the club across the ball, you should work on your stance and your swing. A professional can help you here, but never forget that the slice is probably the most common golf fault among all golfers, amateurs or professionals.
The way to fix a golf slice, then, is to identify the cause and to work on it. If you cannot identify the cause, then a stronger grip is a good way to resolve it until you find out the real cause.
